J.Cole & Dreamville

J.Cole is not just one of the hottest new comers in the game, he's one of the best rappers across the whole board. His word play, lyrics, delivery, and subject matter are not only up there with Drake and Kendrick, but rival Em and Jay. Although, us hip-hop heads have been living in this Cole world since 09', the rest of the public came around with his debut album The Sideline Story. And, any stragglers that had not jumped on the bandwagon, did so last summer with his sophomore album Born Sinner (which was easily the best rap album released in 2013). Cole isn't just a top tier MC, he is probably the most underrated producer in the game. The only albums with a better sound than Born Sinner last year were Yeezus and My Name Is My Name. Being on scene for the last five years and only dropping two albums, Cole stays relevant by always releasing music. Before dropping Born Sinner Cole released Truly Yours EP one, two, and three. Last night Cole dropped another mixtape, Revenge Of The Dreamer, marking the beginning of his new deal with Interscope. The rapper/producer can now add record executive to his resume. Cole is Still a Roc Nation artist, but his own record label Dreamville, which he founded back in 2007, is now with Interscope Records. Dreamville's roster includes artist Bas, Omen, and KQuick, and are all featured on his latest mixtape. Last night, after his Madison Square Garden performance, Cole sat down with Forbes, to talk about the new deal: "As an executive it gives me the opportunity to sign acts and break them, but as a producer it allows me to produce someone’s entire album and put it out – that’s what I really look forward to." Cole goes on to speak about why it took over sex years to launch the label commercially: "This is a result of years of learning and figuring this game out,” said Cole. “It’s not an overnight thing but every time you make it up a level you still appreciate and remember level one. As for the artist on his squad, Cole has picked some gems. Only being familiar with Bas from the underground circuit, we knew the man had skill but after listening to the mixtape, it's clear Cole is looking for quality over quantity.

P.S. Here is the new mixtape, along with Bas and Omens latest projects. Also check out J.Cole's performance at Madison Square Garden last night on his birthday no less as he brought out Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z. And be sure to check out our latest TrueMusic Girl Next Door below.

Grammy Bull$h!t

If you didn't watch the Grammys last night you made the right choice. It was yet another year where the most influential genre in music was turned into a mockery. Where to begin? Macklemore and Ryan Lewis beat miraculously beat out Drake's Started From The Bottom, Eminem's Berzerk, Jay Z's Tom Ford, and Kendrick Lamar's Swimming Pools (Drank). In our opinion Drake should have walked away with the honors, but anyone who does not see that Thrift Shop is clearly at the bottom of that list does not know hip-hop. Best Rap Song surprisingly went to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Thrift Shop; beating out ASAP Rocky F**kin Problems, Jay Z Holy Grail, Kanye West New Slaves, and Drake Started From The Bottom. Once again, the worst song out of all five nominations took home the gold. These idiots had two easy choices, Jay or Kanye both deserved to win, and a case could have been mad for Drake. As for Best New Artist. You guessed it, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis beat out James Blake, Kacey Muusgraves, Ed Sheeran, and Kendrick Lamar. HOW IN THE WORLD DO THEY THINK MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS ARE BETTER NEW ARTISTS THAN KENDRICK LAMAR! And, you wont believe who won Best Rap Album? That's right Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The Heist beat out Yeezus, Nothing Was The Same, Magna Carta...Holy Grail, and good kid, m.A.A.d. city. We're not even going to get into the fact the the best rap album of the year (Born Sinner) wasn't nominated, but Kendrick Lamar was the only choice on that list; any other is just asinine. Daft Punk took home Album Of The Year, which wouldn't be a surprise if Macklemore and Ryan Lewis didn't win every other category they were in. Best Rap/Song Collaboration was the only category that the Grammys got right, giving it to Jay Z and JustinTimberlake's Holy Grail, but they did so by snubbing J. Cole and Miguel's Power Trip. The God MC made it a point to take a jab at the award ceremony in his acceptance speech. “I want to thank God for this award,” Jay said, “but I also want to thank him mostly for putting this beautiful light of young lady in my life [Beyonce]. I also want to tell [their daughter] Blue, ‘Look — Daddy got a gold sippy cup,” referencing the Grammy trophy as nothing more than a child's goblet. Macklemore himself even admitted to Kendrick and the world, that he was robbed. Macklemore took a screenshot of his convo with K.Dot and posted it on instagram. At least he knows.
