Lupe Fiasco Talks New Album & Relationship With Jay & Kanye

Lupe Fiasco has been working on his fifth studio album since the release of his last LP, Food & Liquor II, back in 2012. What was suppose to be a two disk album, turned into a part two that was scheduled for release in 2013, which eventually turned into a whole new album at an even later date. His new album, entitled Tetsuo & Youth, is almost finished, and he is currently in the process of narrowing the songs down for the final tracklist. In the latest  interview with DJ SKee on SKEE TV, Lupe speaks on everything from being forced to keep his album at eleven track, to his relationships with Jay Z, Kanye West, and Pharrell. "I only get paid for eleven records," says Lu. "There's a cap on your royalties, where the record label only pays you for eleven records, and in my position anything over eleven records is not just free, it actually pulls money out of my royalties." When asked about his connection to Jay Z, Lupe explained walking away from a possible signing with the rapper's label, and being present for The Black Album. "Jay the homie. I was gonna sign to Roc-A-Fella like in 2002, 2003," says Mr. Fiasco. "Me and my partner Chill, (Free Chill) we decided to start our own piece. He already had a company called On The Rocks, so we decided to start 1st and 15th, 50-50, down the middle," sates Lupe, as he begins to elaborate on his connections with Jay and Kanye. "Young Vice President, fresh in the game, trying to do what it do. Through those travels we met a ton of people: Kanye, Jay Z, Pharrell, all these different folks. I just built a rapport with Jay. Being able to go to Baseline (Studios) and see him put together joints like The Black Album and be a part of that, give him joints for that. So he's always been in the mix. Not So much the past couple albums, the past few years. Still the homie though." In detailing his encounters with Kanye West, Lupe remembers traveling in different circles, while still aspiring artists in Chicago. "I never met him through any Chicago connections. He was always in a different world. He was in a Hyde Park, Common, backpacker world. We was more in like the streets world...Anyways, he was in that piece," as Lupe continues. "We were more over here. But, in Chicago it's  very small city. Doing different events you bump into people. We never really clicked up tough until 'Touch The Sky.' That was even through my partner. I didn't even wanna do 'Touch The Sky.' I didn't wanna do that. That wasn't my piece. It was like 'I'm over here, I don't that.' My partner was like, Nah, you gotta trust me. You gotta do this.' Then from there on we clicked up and kept it moving up until this day." Check out the DJ Skee interview below.
