He may not be one of the hottest names in hip-hop, but the name Damon Dash is forever solidified in hip-hop history. Without Dame there would be no Dipset, no Kanye, and most importantly no Jay. Although, we haven't heard much from Dame since the break up of Roc-a-fella, other than the occasional rumors of his financial troubles, he appears to be back on the scene. After running into Jay at mutual friend, music executive Chaka Pilgrim, Dame has been moving around the media circuit. With a number of interviews in the last month, we know Dame is partnered in the company Fancy, which sells high end clothing, but he must be gearing up for something bigger. Last month Dame participated in Vibe’s “My Philosophy” interview series, and he spoke on his business career, overcoming adversity, and his relationships with Jay, Jim Jones and Cam’Ron. In the up coming February issue of Details Magazine Jay talked about his relationship with former business partner Jay Z. In the interview, Dash asserts “I’m not counting that man’s money” before explaining his influence on Jay Z’s reported $470 million fortune: It’s like saying, “I used to mess with a girl, and before I used to mess with her, she was mediocre. But because she started messing with me, I taught her things. I dressed her, and then I taught her how to have a career.” Does that mean after we break up I’m still supposed to be able to get some ass?’ He laughs at his crass analogy. ‘Like, I don’t feel entitled to that p*ssy. You understand what I’m saying? I don’t feel entitled to nothing he’s got. Dame has never been one to bite his tongue, and according to Dash, people like former Island Def Jam Lyor Cohen and Jay Z’s manager John Meneilly are only around Jay Z for monetary gain. 'No disrespect to Jay—but every single person I see hanging around him is making money off him. They all conform so they can eat off him." Back in 2004 Dash and Jay had dinner at the restaurant Da Silvano in New York City. Jay announced he would be assuming presidency of Def Jam. Due to Dame’s much publicized temper, Jay felt the best business decision was to distance himself from Dash, however offered to give Dash the Roc-A-Fella name if Dash turned over the rights to Reasonable Doubt. Dash refused because Jay Z’s “just business” approach went against the original plan for Roc-A-Fella: "Honestly, I didn’t give a f*ck. The whole thing was based on our friendship. He made it clear he didn’t want me to be a part of Roc-A-Fella. I was like, ‘A’ight.’ Everything else was like, ‘Go be you. You want to do this, do it.’ He told me it was just business. He said that it was business. ‘I want to look like a businessman, and I can’t be a businessman around you." In the article, Dash is quoted to have said that record label employees, specifying Def Jam are “slaves” whom “put their balls on a silver platter” in exchange for a proverbial ”three meals a day, a warm bed.” The truth of the matter is that Dame is obviously a great business and him getting back in to the world of hip-hop will only continue to raise the bar. However, this time he needs to work on his approach to the politics of this industry, if he ever wants to rise to the level of greatness he is known for in this game.
