The Death of World Star

Everyone in the hip-hop community knows of WorldStarHipHop. It is an entertainment site that focus predominantly videos of violent and despicable behavior in the black community as with a decent amount of hip-hop interviews and music videos. In a recent article on The Washington Post site, Rahiel Tesfamariam writes a post entitled "Death of World Star Hip Hop (D.O.WSHH)". In the article, Rahiel writes to all hip-hop artists and community activists, to help damage the brand. She also criticizes those who try and defend WSHH. For instance, The Huffington Post had an online debate on the subject "Do 'Hood Sites' Actually Normalize Black Stereotypes", and Ms. Tesfamariam states that "To defend World Star Hip Hop is to defend the normalization of violent stereotypes and exploitation of pain, anger and brokenness". On one hand, she is absolutely, WSHH has turned into a beacon for deplorable acts of violence. Coupled with promoting the degradation of our black females, WSHH has become a major source of humiliation and debasement of the black community. However, we must not forget the positives, all be it few and far between. WSHH does shed light on the injustices all over the, as well as provide many inspirational clips. Not to mention, the site is a great source for underground artists and original hip-hop. Last year mambers of the Zulu Nation, Grandmaster Melle Mel and Quadeer "MC Spice" Shakur, petitioned for the site to take the "HipHop" off its name; arguing that World Star was misrepresenting the foundations and true principles of hip-hop. “WorldStarHipHop has no respect, as far as I’m concerned, for our people and our music,” says Shakur last March. “If it was in fact just a site for what we call ‘entertainment’ then let it be known at the bottom of your page. Put some kind of disclaimer that you are not in fact involved in or a part of real Hip Hop culture.” Melle Mel also spoke on the matter stating “WorldStarHipHop has no more to do with Hip Hop than FedEx has to do with the federal government,”. Truthfully they couldn't be more right. World Star has lost its way. When World Star first came out the covered predominantly hip-hop interviews and the newest music videos, along with strange and interesting things from across the world. Just check out their early pages from six and seven years ago. The only violence displayed on the site was that of feuding artists, which can be classified as hip-hop news. Although, they can not be solely to blame. The few deviants in society are equally responsible for providing the massive amounts of negative material. In this technologically accessible day and age in is no surprise that there is enough material for World Star to publish new "Fight Compilations" every week. We can also expect to see more "Sharkeisha" and "Jaide" style videos. Its truly saddening to think that this is just the beginning of the foolery. Until prominent artists publicly denounce these outlandish "turnt up" movements and "ratchet" acts, that the black community has become so infatuated with; we will continue to deteriorate from within.
