Kid Cudi: "If I Rapped About What I Have There Would Be No Drake"

Former G.O.O.D. Music member Kid Cudi has always made good music. His latest album, Satellite Flight debuted at #4 on Billboards Top 200. Although, he has always made very high conscious music that is outside the box, Cudi has always had a naturally commercial sound. This has brought him great success for an artist that does not fit the dogma of the music industry. However, breaking from the norm of "bang bang shoot'em up, money, drugs, and hoes" agenda that the media has tried to instill in our black community has cost him the super-stardom that some of his peers have been able to achieve. During his appearance last night (March 14th) on The Arsenio Hall Show, Cudi spoke on  his mission with his music. When asked what a song would sound like if he rapped about all of his material possessions, the 29 year old singer succinctly replies “there would be no Drake.” While joking about replacing Drake, Cudi further elaborates on his opinion of Hip Hop’s fixation with materialistic lyrics. According to him, the flaunting of wealth, which is popular in Drake’s music, has  become a detriment to the Black culture as a whole. While Drizzy may not bee the leading cause, Cudi makes a valid point. If rappers are going to rap about their wealth, why not make it positive instead of negative. Don't rap about you car rap about how its better to buy a house first. Rap about bout the smart investment deals you make and how you are so rich because you handle your money so well, instead of encouraging every ill-informed mind to squander their paychecks on meaningless items that vanish or depreciate in value seconds after purchase. Now there are artists who do a good job at this, the best being Jay Z, Ludacris, and sometimes T.I.. Now, as far as "there would be no Drake", we're pretty sure that was a hyperbole coming from Mr.Mescudi. Cudi makes great music but Drake is obviously a force that cannot be stopped. And, while Cudi makes good music, he is not the dopest lyricist. His rhymes are tight and flow is melodic, but as far as going in, his delivery is not top echelon. For those of you hip-hop heads, who haven't given the Kid a chance yet we have his entire discography for you. He's definitely worth the listen.
