Just the other day, Hot 97 lost thee most recognizable voice on the airwaves, Angie Martinez. This past Tuesday, Angie took to Instagram to announce that that she resigned from Hot 97, as she thanked Emmis Communications and the Hot 97 staff. The very next day, Ms. Martinez joined Hot 97 rival, Clear Channel Medial; the parent company to Power 105.1 in New York and 103.5 The Beat in Miami. After over a quarter century with the most influential station in hip-hop, the radio veteran will be teaming up with Angle Yee, Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy, DJ Clue, and DJ Prostyle at 105.1. She will be hosting an afternoon program to air on Power and The Beat. "I am excited to join Power 105.1 in New York and The Beat in Miami and expand my brand even further in the coming months," said Martinez in a statement regarding her recent power move. People may not realize how big of a deal this is, and what this means for hip-hop. Over the past two decades Hot 97 has branded themselves at the sound of hip-hop. Pretty much, whatever Hot 97 says and plays is reality, and Angie Martinez was a big part of that. Not to mention, the relationships Angie has with the biggest names in hip-hop. But, not being able to get anymore interviews from Jay z and Drake are the least of Hot 97 problems. Power 105.1 has been their biggest competitors, and over the past two years, they have been able to take over the morning talk show market. Now, they will completely dominating New York radio all day long, as everyone with a radio will be tuning in to hear Angie Martinez. This is going to make the music that Power 105.1 much more influential. Don't know who they plan to replace Angie Martinez, but then again we don't know if it really matters. Either way, it's a great move on her part. Better to be on a rising star than a sinking ship.
